Quick answer: choose a website designer who gives you a fixed price in writing, a date the site will be ready, live websites you can open on your phone, and a fast site. Make sure the domain, hosting and files are in your name, and ask what changes cost after launch before you pay.
Search "website designer Malaysia" and you get freelancers, small studios, big agencies and directories, with prices from a few hundred ringgit to tens of thousands. Most of them look good on their own website. This checklist helps you see the difference before you pay anyone, us included.
7 checks before you hire a website designer
- 1. A fixed price, in writing. "From RM…" is not a price. Ask for one number for the whole job, and a list of what is in it: how many pages, who writes the text, how many rounds of changes.
- 2. A ready date. Ask when the site will be live, counted from when you send your content. A designer who cannot give a date usually has no plan.
- 3. You own the domain, hosting and files. Your domain (.com.my or .com) and hosting should be in your name, with your login. If the designer holds them, changing designer later can mean losing your site or your address.
- 4. Live websites you can open. Screenshots are easy to fake. Ask for links to sites they built for real businesses, then open them on your phone. Do they load fast? Can you find the WhatsApp button?
- 5. Speed on phones. Most of your customers will visit on a phone. Put the designer's own website into a free speed test (Google PageSpeed, or our free speed test). If their own site is slow, yours probably will be too.
- 6. Built for you, or a template? A template is quicker and cheaper but looks like many other sites and is often locked to one builder. A site designed for your business takes longer and costs more. Both are fine, as long as you know which one you are paying for.
- 7. What happens after launch. Who fixes things if something breaks? What does it cost to change a photo or a price? Is there a monthly fee, and what does it cover?
What a website designer in Malaysia usually costs
There is no one price, because "a website" can mean one page or fifty. What moves the price: the number of pages, whether it is a template or designed from scratch, who writes the text, extra features (booking, online shop, member login) and how many languages. Read how much a website costs in Malaysia for the full breakdown.
Two costs are usually not in the design price: your domain and your hosting. You pay both every year, to your own provider.
Budget website design: where cheap gets expensive
- Monthly builder fees. A cheap site on a website builder can cost more over three years than a one-time build.
- The designer owns your domain. Cheap now, a problem when you want to leave.
- Every change is a new invoice. Ask what a small change costs before you sign.
- Slow on phones. A heavy template full of plugins loads slowly, and customers leave before they see your price.
Freelancer, studio or agency?
A freelancer is usually the cheapest and you talk to the person doing the work, but check they will still be around in a year. A small studio sits in the middle: fixed packages, faster replies, a process. An agency suits big projects with a marketing team behind them, at agency prices. For most small and medium businesses in Malaysia, a freelancer or small studio with live work to show is enough.

Common questions
How much does a website designer cost in Malaysia?
It depends on pages, design and features. A simple one-page site can start from a few hundred ringgit, while a company site with several pages costs more, and online shops or booking systems more again. With us, a one-page site starts from RM499 and a full revamp from RM999 (founding price for our first five clients). Domain and hosting are paid separately.
How long does it take to build a business website?
A small business site usually takes one to three weeks. Most of the waiting is for content: text, photos and prices. We build in 7 working days once we have your content.
Do I have to pay a website designer every month?
Not always. Many designers charge once for the build. You still pay yearly for your domain and hosting. A monthly care plan is optional and covers updates, backups and fixes.
What should I prepare before contacting a website designer?
Your logo, the services or products you sell, a few photos, your WhatsApp number, and two or three websites you like. If you already have a website, send the link.
