A slow website loses people before they read a single word. On a phone with patchy 4G, many visitors leave after a few seconds of a blank screen. Google also checks speed, so a slow site can show up lower in search.
First, test it (free)
Run your address through our free speed test. It uses Google PageSpeed, the same check Google uses, and shows a score for phone and computer. Look at the phone score first: that is where most of your customers are.
The 6 usual reasons
- Huge photos. A photo straight from the phone can be 5 MB. Shown on a website, it should be a fraction of that.
- Too many plugins. Every WordPress plugin adds its own code. Ten plugins doing small jobs add up.
- Heavy page builders. Drag-and-drop builders make pages easy to edit but load a lot of extra code on every page.
- Slow or overloaded hosting. The cheapest shared plans can be slow when the server is busy.
- Sliders, videos and pop-ups at the top of the page, all loading before the visitor sees anything.
- Old, never-updated sites carrying years of unused code and scripts.
Fix it or rebuild it?
If the problem is a few big photos or one heavy plugin, a small fix is enough and cheaper. If the site is built on a heavy page builder, stacked with plugins, and also looks dated, a fix only helps a little. Then a rebuild in clean code is usually the better money: the new site is fast from the start and easier to change.
